YMCA Free Running Programs Take Off at Area Parks

YMCAThe Knox County YMCA is holding running groups at local parks throughout the summer to offer youths a fun way to get outdoors.Groups will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at five area parks.

Mondays will be at HT Custer Park at 10 a.m. and Kiwanis Park at 10:45 a.m. On Tuesdays, groups will meet at Rotary park at 10 a.m. and on Thursdays, groups meet at Lincoln park at 10 a.m. and Optimist Park at 10:45 a.m.

Knox County YMCA CEO Adam Sampson tells WGIL that they wanted to provide wellness programs out where the kids live.

“We wanted to ensure that we were providing wellness programs for all youth, no matter where they live,” says Sampson. “Kind of the idea that we wanted to go out into the neighborhood and try to engage kids in healthy lifestyles where they live. Kind of the same approach we do with some of our mentoring programs.”

The runs will meet with Certified Running Coach Carmen Peterson and run around town for a half hour and enjoy activities as well.

Sampson says many parents have reached out in appreciation of offering a program out where they live.

The Youth Fun Run groups will also work toward a goal of running in the 2015 Big Steps Race on September 12th if they’d like. The Big Steps Race will offer three length options, including a 10k, a 5k and a one-mile fun run.
