Rockford Proposes New Rules for Ride-Hailing Services

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) – Ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft would be affected by newly proposed rules in Rockford.
The rules are based on a state law adopted in January that includes insurance requirements, background checks and a no drugs or alcohol policy for the services.

The Rockford Register Star reports the aldermen in the Code and Regulation Committee will discuss the proposal Monday.

The proposal also would require ride-hailing companies to obtain a license for between $1,000 and $2,000. The city also has proposed changes to its taxi rules. Assistant city attorney Angela Hammer says the intention is to have equal safety requirements for taxi drivers and ride-hailing drivers.

Uber representatives said they haven’t seen the proposed rules but likely would support them if they are modeled on state law.
