Judge Throws Out Most Corruption Charges Against Ex-Chief

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) – A Lake County judge has thrown out nearly all of the corruption charges filed against former North Chicago Police Chief Michael Newsome.
Ruling Tuesday on a defense motion claiming statute of limitation violations, Judge James Booras dismissed two counts of felony theft of government property charges, as well as one count of misallocation of funds filed against Newsome. Booras upheld one count of official misconduct.
The Waukegan News-Sun reports prosecutors plan to refile the charges.

Defense attorney Douglas Zeit argued the charges violated a three-year statute of limitation deadline that passed between the charges and the alleged thefts.

Prosecutors accuse Newsome of stealing more than $140,000 from North Chicago’s drug asset forfeiture fund. He was indicted on the charges in December 2012.

Newsome was appointed police chief in 2005. He resigned in 2012.
