BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A six-ton slab of limestone from an old county courthouse in Illinois has been moved to temporary storage.
The (Belleville) News- Democrat reports history buffs are looking for a spot where the artifact can be displayed.
The relic was once part of the old St. Clair County Courthouse. That building was torn down in 1972 after more than a century on the Belleville Public Square.
The limestone slab has been outside the home of Paul Reis, a Belleville businessman whose property is to be auctioned next week. The land was once owned by one of the first settlers in Illinois.
Volunteers from the Belleville Historic Preservation Commission helped move the stone Thursday.
Belleville Historic Preservation member Jack LeChien says it could eventually end up back on the public square.
