Recently, Governor Bruce Rauner has approved legislation sponsored by State Senator Darin LaHood and State Representative Keith Sommer to help Illinois parents adopt children from foreign countries.According to a press release, LaHood stated that “this legislation is another example of how we are trying to reduce some of the hurdles that face Illinois families during the adoption process.”
LaHood says the passed bill would help move along the adoption process for Illinois families.
“What this bill does is helps expedite and streamline the process for international adoption in the state of Illinois,” says LaHood. “This essentially enables the state to speed up the process so that children from other countries that want to be adopted in this country, this make the process easier, quicker, and helps eliminate some of the burdens that were in place before.”
LaHood stated “we need to update our state laws to reflect federal standards.” The bill removes state-level redundancies that are covered by federal standards and establishes better post-adoption services.
The legislation took effect immediately.
