Knoxville School District Expects Budget Surplus

Knoxville School District LogoThe Knoxville District 202 School Board approved a final budget for the 2016 fiscal year at last week’s meeting, and a surplus balance is anticipated.Superintendent Steve Wilder says they should see just over $324,000 in surplus.

Wilder tells WGIL that this is a result of appropriations by the state and precautions taken last spring to bring down expenses.

“The surplus this year, at least the surplus we are projecting right now is a little bit unexpected,” says Wilder. “The Board of Education and I made some decisions not to fill some positions last spring and kind of juggle some of the staff assignments. We were kind of working towards doing our best to create some savings and then, the increase in the education budget from the Legislators and the Governor was unexpected. So, it was really a combination of both of those things that created the bulk of the surplus.”

Wilder says he would like to save up money in reserves, just in case their budget changes mid-year, but plans to spend some on paying back towards last year’s deficit.
