DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — The cannon at Northern Illinois University football games has been silenced.
The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reports that this coming season the familiar boom of a howitzer every time the Huskies score a touchdown will be replaced by fireworks.
The school says the main reason is that the addition of the Endzone Club in the south end zone left little room for the cannon from the Illinois National Guard Armory in Sycamore.
Morris White of the athletic department says another reason for the decision was that fans on the south side of the stadium complained about the noise of the cannon.
The cannon has been signaling touchdowns since the late 1990s or early 2000s.
