Psychiatrists Differ on Mental Health of Accused Cop Killer

CHICAGO (AP) — Psychiatrists testifying in the trial of man accused of shooting to death a Chicago police officer are disagreeing over the mental health of the suspect.

A forensic psychiatrist, Dr. James Corcoran, testifying Monday for the defense, said Bryant Brewer suffered brain damage when the officer pistol-whipped him with his service weapon. But said he couldn’t tell if Brewer was legally insane at the time of the 2010 killing.

An expert hired by prosecutors later testified Brewer was legally sane when he killed Officer Thor Soderberg. Dr. Christofer Cooper said Brewer showed no signs of either a traumatic brain injury or mental illness.

The 43-year-old Soderberg was shot with his own gun outside a South Side police building. Defense attorney Caroline Glennon says Brewer believed Soderberg would kill him.
