Q&A on U of Illinois: What to know after emails, resignation

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — News that University of Illinois Chancellor Phyllis Wise and others at the flagship campus used private email accounts to avoid public scrutiny of deliberations on key issues is adding to an athletic controversy at the university.

The university released the emails Friday, a day after Wise’s surprise resignation.

University officials say the use of private email accounts is fine, but they’re subject to public requests to view university-related information.

In the emails, Wise at one point says she’s being careful to delete some private emails to keep discussions out of view.

Wise is resigning effective Wednesday, and will take a faculty position where university spokesman Tom Hardy says she’ll likely paid close to $300,000 a year.

It isn’t clear yet whether others will be disciplined over the private emails.
