SHERMAN, Ill. (AP) — Officials in the central Illinois village of Sherman are proposing a 1 percent local sales tax to spur development on a long-fallow plot near the popular Rail Golf Course.
The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports the village will have a public hearing on the matter Aug. 18.
There were plans in 1988 to develop the 25-acre section on the south side of Sherman, just north of Springfield. It included a lodge-style resort, health club and swanky restaurant. It never materialized.
The tax increase would be added to the 6.75 percent base sales tax. Village President Trevor Clatfelter says it would give site owner Lincoln Land Development Co. of Springfield revenue as incentives for incoming businesses.
Sherman has grown from a town of 200 in 1960 to about 4,500 today.
