BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — A large donation could allow the Bloomington zoo’s flamingo exhibit to take off.
The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports the Miller Park Zoo received a $50,000 contribution from the Ewing Zoo Foundation.
Construction of the project was approved last year. But four construction bids came in higher than expected.
Even a smaller, redesigned, $300,000 exhibit was in doubt because the zoo was still short of funds. It received contributions of $150,000 from the city of Bloomington and $100,000 from the Miller Park Zoological Society.
The city council will vote Monday on whether to proceed.
Jay Tetzloff oversees the zoo as Bloomington parks and recreation director. He says a nesting island was moved to save money on a pool. And city employees are doing demolition and landscaping work.
