CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) –The University of Illinois no longer plans to fire Chancellor Phyllis Wise, instead accepting her resignation and a return to a tenured faculty position.
Wise first announced her resignation after four years on the job shortly before disclosure that she used private email to avoid public scrutiny of university business.
University trustees rejected the offer and rescinded a negotiated $400,000 bonus, leading Wise to tender her resignation a second time on Thursday night.
The university on Friday released a letter to Wise from system President Timothy Killeen thanking Wise for her service and welcoming her to its School of Molecular and Cellular Biology.
Wise had declined an appointment to work for Killeen in an advisory role.
