CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A newspaper report says University of Illinois athletes tested positive for banned drugs 65 times during the 2014-2015 school year.
The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported Wednesday that it’s more than any school year in at least a decade. The newspaper cites documents obtained through an information request.
The newspaper says the next highest total in the past 10 years was 52 positive tests in the 2009-2010 year.
The sports with the highest numbers were football, which has the biggest roster, followed by baseball/softball and basketball. The most common drug was marijuana.
Random drug testing has been in place for years. However, university officials don’t publicize names of athletes. Discipline is largely handled internally.
