University of Illinois Extension Offers Resources for Disaster Preparedness

ExtensionSeptember is National Preparedness month, and the University of Illinois Extension has several resources available for anyone to be prepared for any disaster.Community Development Educator Carrie McKillip says resources on the Extension Disaster Education Network covers any disaster, but focuses heavily on flooding.

McKillip tells WGIL that she encourages anyone to be prepared with a safety kit for a few days, just in case a disaster hits unexpectedly.

“I would encourage people to make sure that they’re aware of what they should do to be prepared for disasters,” says McKillip. “People always think someone is going to come to their rescue and people need to make sure that they have materials and kits to be able to take care of themselves for a few days, should there be a massive disaster.”

McKillip says the University of Illinois Extension has been aiding in diaster preparedness since the 1993 Mississippi River floods, but covers other disasters such as tornados or drought.

Disaster Preparedness information is available through the University of Illinois Extension website.
