Moffitt Considers Position to Override Rauner Veto

Don MoffittIllinois House Representatives are expected to vote on Senate Bill 1229 today to override a veto by Governor Bruce Rauner.

The bill calls for bargaining employees to give up rights to strike and prevent a lockout and would change current law to a binding arbitration.

That’s according to State Representative Don Moffitt who says he is considering both sides and will listen to the floor debate before taking a stance.

Moffitt tells WGIL that there are significant fiscal issues with the bill, and that today’s vote will determine if the House and Senate override the veto.

“There are a lot of factors in this bill–a lot of serious implications,” says Moffitt. “The Governor has vetoed Senate Bill 1229. The Senate has overridden his veto, and now it comes to the House, so the vote will be whether or not to override the Governor’s veto.”

Moffitt says Governor Rauner sent him a letter with concerns about the bill and how it would create more fiscal issues.
Some of Rauner’s concerns include $1.6 billion in salary, overtime and pension costs for tax payers, and eliminating savings for healthcare.

Moffitt attended a meeting at the public library on Monday for the Service Employees International Union, where they discussed services that could be lost if the arbitration bill is killed.

Moffitt says he wants to hear from both sides, but has concerns with adding to the fiscal problems Illinois faces.
