CHICAGO (AP) – Shunned to host the America’s Cup itself, Chicago has been awarded an America’s Cup World Series stop in June.
It will be the first time a freshwater venue has hosted America’s Cup-affiliated racing in the event’s 164-year history.
The America’s Cup World Series is a qualifying event for the 2017 America’s Cup in Bermuda. The Chicago regatta, announced Tuesday, will be held June 10-12 at Navy Pier.
Two-time America’s Cup champion Oracle Team USA considered Chicago to host the 2017 America’s Cup before it was awarded to Bermuda, a British overseas territory.
