Monmouth College Hits FM Dial with New Station

Monmouth CollegeMonmouth College debuted its new college radio station over the summer, and the institution will host an on-air launch party to celebrate this Friday.

105.9 FM WPFS changed from WMCR this past June, after making various upgrades to its studio in Wallace Hall. The new call letters stand for “Proud Fighting Scots.”

That’s according to faculty adviser Chris Goble, who says in a press release that this is the first full blown transmitting station in the college’s history.
Goble tells WGIL, that it’s an exciting time for the students.

“It’s more real now,” says Goble. “The idea that there is a potential audience all around the community here–both on campus and off. You have the understanding that we now have a license, we now have a more tangible and real kind of audience. I think for them, it’s really going to make them up their game and think about what they are doing.”

Friday’s celebration will host a number of special guests on-air, including Monmouth President Clarence Wyatt and First Lady Lobie Stone. Wyatt will host his own show for the event.

The station began transmitting over the summer break on a limited rotation of about 400 songs, which Goble says is about to drastically change.

Although there will be no official format, regular programming will include rebroadcasts of KBUR’s Robin Johnson, a local show by Monmounth Alumni band “The Brooks Brothers,” and tentative plans to have other specialty shows as well.
