Elderly Man Appears on Robbery Charges

knox county courthouseA 76-year-old Galesburg man made his first appearance in court today following his arrest on robbery charges Sunday night.

According to police reports, Charles E. Basham entered the North Henderson Street Dollar General store where he told a cashier to give him money.

When the cashier asked if he was serious, Basham handed the woman two small caliber bullets.

The elderly man left the Dollar General store with $199 before returning with the stack of stolen bills later Sunday night.

Police at the scene placed Basham under arrest.

During today’s court appearance, Judge Thomas Ewing read the charges against the would-be robber; Basham faces one count of aggravated robbery and one count of robbery.

The aggravated charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

Basham remains in the Knox County jail on $50,000 bond with a scheduled bond reduction hearing at 2 p.m. October14th.
