Levee board chief faces removal over district car repairs

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A southwestern Illinois levee district president could lose a $15,000-a-year appointed seat for failing to report more than $33,000 in work for the district performed at his auto body shop.

Madison County board chairman Alan Dustan tells the Belleville News-Democrat he plans to ask the board to remove Andy Economy as Metro East Sanitary District president. A majority vote is required.

The work by Andy’s Auto Body & Towing includes three repairs in three years of a government-owned SUV used by the district’s executive director.

Economy’s annual economic interest statements showing board appointees’ business relationships with local government don’t list the body shop work. Economy didn’t immediately respond to an Associated Press interview request.

Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons has called for a special prosecutor to investigate.
