Knox County Assessment Supervisor witnesses Miami airport security scare

The Associated Press and multiple news agencies reported Monday that an investigation at the Miami International Airport delayed 50 flights after officers and the FBI responded to investigate a suspicious bag.

Knox County Supervisor of Assessment Chris Gray tells WGIL she was onboard a delayed plane at the Miami airport during the investigation.

“We just heard somebody very loudly say, ‘hands on your head and look straight ahead,’” she says, “and that scared me because we didn’t know who it was that said that.”

Gray says she and her husband were returning home from vacation at Key West when the incident occurred. With no context for what was going on, Gray’s first thought was terrorists.

“When we heard that voice say that very loudly, we’re like, ‘OK, is this a good guy or a bad guy?’” Gray said. “I wasn’t going to stick my head out in the aisle to possibly get it blown off! Y’know, I’m not stupid!”

After scanning her flight and many others, officers found the person they were looking for.

The passenger, identified as a dentist, was questioned and searched before being released without charges.

Since the story broke, the Transportation Security Administration has stated standard procedures were not followed, adding that the airport’s actions are being reviewed.
