Veterans of Foreign Wars chapters, American Legions and other organization around the country are honoring those who have served this Veterans Day.
One such celebration was at VFW Post 2301 in Monmouth, where presenters included Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos and performances by the Monmouth College Band.
Gary Holmberg served in the United State’s Air Force from 1974 to 1978 and has been the president of the VFW men’s auxiliary, which he is still an officer for.
After the service, Holmberg told WGIL just what the packed VFW hall meant to him.
“This is great,” Holmberg said. “It shows the citizens and the county are dedicated to veterans and their out and show their support in many different ways. This is one of the greatest ones, when they’re all come together.”
Another Veterans Day celebration, also attended by Bustos, was the ground breaking ceremony of a new veterans memorial monument in Alexis.
There, she shared her own familiarity with veterans.
“In my earliest memories of veterans day, were of going to a park with my grandfather, who was a World War I veteran,” Bustos said. “I’m proud to be a grandaughter of a World War I veteran.”
The ground breaking was for a $60,000 monument expected to be finished next spring.
