Purported drug lord associate to be sentenced in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — Another purported associate of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is to be sentenced in a federal case in Chicago that names Guzman.

Tomas Arevalo-Renteria faces a minimum 10-year prison term when sentenced Wednesday for arranging deliveries of heroin and cocaine from Mexico to Chicago. The 46-year-old pleaded guilty last year.

Prosecutors described Renteria as a logistical coordinator for Guzman’s Sinaloa cartel and want a 25-year prison term.

Renteria’s lawyers say that would be too harsh a sentence for someone who was toward the bottom of the operation’s command structure.

Mexican authorities captured Guzman last year. But he escaped via a tunnel and is at large.

Prosecutors in Chicago have convicted half a dozen Sinaloa figures. If Guzman’s recaptured, they’ve indicated they’d like to see him in Chicago, too.
