2016 Knox County Budget ready for approval

knox county sealAfter shuffling funds a budget is on it’s way to being finalized.

The Knox County Finance Committee will send next year’s budget to be approved by the full board in their meeting next week. A November 31st deadline for a balanced budget was looming.

Contingency funds had to be moved to address the deficit.

No personnel cuts are being made but Knox County Finance Committee member, Richard Conklin tells WGIL that there’s still work to be done to avoid cuts in the future.

“Come January we’re going to sit down and do some brain storming to address that issue and I think there are things to do. One of the things to I think was mentioned was digressing ourselves of assets and how that might play out but I think those are things that we’ll be discussing in January or February so we aren’t here next year having to make cuts.”

The committee is taking what they call a vacation from contributing to the health insurance fund which has more than it was projected to.

Another measure taken by the committee was setting up a procedure to keep departments from exceeding line item budgets.

In the future, if departments are going to go over budget they’ll now have to establish to the board that there are emergency reasons for doing so.
