Cuban professor looking to link Illinois to Havana

CSCCCarl Sandburg College President Dr. Lori Sundberg made a trip to Cuba in which she heard a speaker that shattered several misconceptions she had about Cuba.

That speaker, Dr. Mario Masvidal, spoke at Carl Sandburg yesterday and has made the rounds at several other Illinois community colleges.

Masvidal, a professor of semiotics and communication in Cuba is educating students on the realities in his native country

The United States has had a trade embargo in place with Cuba since 1960. He says this has hurt the communist nation in many ways such as healthcare.

Medical personnel are adequate, but as he tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL, restricted trade hinders the ability to get proper equipment.

“The government has to overcome a lot of obstacles to get medicine through third countries or third parties because of the U.S. embargo. Mostly, not only that but mostly, it’s an obstacle for that.”

He also expressed his desire to establish an exchange program between Illinois colleges and where he teaches at the University of Havana.

An exchange of professors and students between the two nations, in his opinion would be a great way to continue removing barriers between the two countries.
