Knox County Chief Public Defender announces bid for circuit judge

David Hansen has formally announced his candidacy for a Ninth Judicial Circuit judge vacancy created by last month’s retirement of Chief Judge James B. Stewart.

Hansen intends to place his name on the Democratic ballot for next year’s March 15 primary election.

Following the retirement of Chief Public Defender Jim Harrell in November of last year, Hansen transitioned from his role as a felony prosecutor in the Knox County State’s Attorney’s office to the open public defender spot by court vote.

Before working in Knox County’s criminal justice system, he represented clients in arbitration hearings and mediation as well as bench and jury trials in state and federal court for a civil litigation firm.

Hansen served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Reserves from 1997 to 2004. He served in the Iraq War in 2003.
