College classes are about to resume from Thanksgiving break, leaving students just enough time to prep for finals ahead of the lengthy winter vacation.
That means most students will go home for break, wherever home may be.
At Knox College, where winter vacation started more than a week ago, students come from 48 states and 51 countries.
Knox Chief Communications Officer Megan Scott says, quoting college President Teresa Amott, “You learn the most from the people least like you.”
“It means that our students are challenging their own perceptions of what the world is like,” Scott says. “They’re learning about different perspectives, different religions, different backgrounds, just how you live, from different students.”
Over at Monmouth College, Director of Communications Jeff Rankin tells WGIL the vast majority of students — about 90 percent — are from Illinois.
That being said, the school has about 70 international students from 31 different countries.
“Because we have so many that are somewhat homogeneous coming from Illinois, a lot from Western Illinois and the Chicago Area, they aren’t always exposed to a lot of different cultures, different ideas,” Rankin says. “And so, we’ve had a very rich experience with the students that we do have.”
Carl Sandburg College has three students listed from other countries as well as students from 13 states in the U.S.
