Volunteers mail their thanks to those serving, those who served

1201151017~2Last year, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Knox and Warren counties participated in the Giving Tuesday for the first time. The event saw some 300 volunteer-written letters go out to current and former military personnel thanking them for their service.

Local RSVP Director Amy Griswold tells WGIL that record was broken before volunteers had even gathered yesterday morning at the Galesburg VNA Community Services building.

“Residents from the Kensington have already brought me 400 this morning and I have two other groups that have brought me 60 and 70. We’ve already exceeded last year so my goal for this year is 1,000.”

Galesburg volunteer Mickie Knott was was hard at work writing letters during the Giving Tuesday. She says it’s good to see people pay their respect to area servicemen and women.

“I think it’s fantastic that the country is finally recognizing all the veterans because our history of recognizing veterans has not been all that it should’ve been. So, I’m just thrilled to thank all the service men, all the veterans who are helping us right now.”

Knott’s husband is Bill Knott, a Vietnam War veteran and commander at the local VFW.
