CHICAGO (AP) — Opponents of a proposed medical marijuana shop in a southeast Chicago neighborhood are glad the business has changed its plans.
Community resident Dedra Delaney said Tuesday she’s “overjoyed” by Illinois Grown Medicine’s announcement that it’s looking for a new location. She expects she’ll be asked to help others organize against medical marijuana sales in their neighborhoods.
Illinois Grown Medicine announced Monday it has withdrawn its zoning request. CEO Les Hollis says company officials are “confident” that they will be able to find another site in southeast Chicago that will meet state requirements and gain community support.
The company wanted to put its shop across the street from a roller-skating rink on East 87th Street. Delaney and others said they objected to the location, but not to medical marijuana in general.
