District 7 State Trooper Jason Wilson tells WGIL the first step is to determine if an active shooter is present before addressing the threat.
“Our first and primary job in one of those horrible situations as a police officer would be to stop the killing,” Wilson says. “Once that’s taken care of, we move to the second phase, which is stop the dying. So what we are going to try and do is to neutralize any sort of threat to the public safety.”
Tom Simkins is the Emergency Management Agency Coordinator for the city of Galesburg. If an incident like the San Bernardino shooting or last week’s Colorado Springs shooting were to happen in Galesburg, Simkins says the Galesburg Police Department would take the lead.
“Initially you are going to rely on the training and the day to day expertise of the emergency response people,” Simkins says.
If needed, business, education and emergency agency leaders would be assembled to further asses necessary actions.
