Lombard Middle School goes viral

It started as a school hand signal that a few teachers and students would occasionally throw at school and sporting events.

Now the Lombard L has turned into a local social media phenomenon, even reaching unexpected places.

The school’s twitter account was started last year by Principal Nick Sutton.

Sutton tells WGIL their Twitter account’s activity is shown on a monitor in the office.

“I talked to a couple of my secretaries and said, ‘would it be a lot of fun if when people visit before they go, we say hey, would it you mind if we took a picture of you flashing the Lombard L,’” Suttons says. “So that way it immediately goes on the that monitor in the office and the rest has kind of just taken off.”

It has taken off to other Galesburg schools, local businesses, even an Army base in Alaska where people are posing in pictures with their right hand up, with their elbow intersecting with the left hand.

Even two-time WNBA MVP and Olympic gold medalist Candace Parker tweeted herself holding up the L.

Participants take a picture of themselves doing the sign and tweet it with the hashtag wearelombard to @Lombard205

Sutton says it’s a part of a movement to make Lombard students aware of the rich history of the institution dating back over 150 years and to take pride in what the school is today.

“This is just a great way to kind of further show that this is a great place to be,” he says.
