Illinois district takes up deal over locker room access

CHICAGO (AP) — A suburban Chicago district is considering public testimony on a deal with federal officials over a transgender student’s use of a girl’s locker room and could consider a rescind vote.

Palatine-based Township High School District 211 and the Education Department’s Civil Rights Office reached agreement last week. But both sides have bickered about its meaning on several fronts.

Among them, Superintendent Daniel Cates had said the deal pertained to one transgender student. Federal officials said it applied to all.

The district released a Monday letter in which federal officials agreed the locker room access provision applies to one student. An Education Department spokeswoman would only say it’s “consistent” with what’s been said.

Public comment was scheduled through late Monday, followed by a closed-door session and possible vote.
Rescinding might lead to losing federal funds.
