Candidates in the 74th list business background, law degree, veteran status and board experience as strengths

election-day-16

election dayThe race for Representative Don Moffitt’s seat in the 74th District is gaining momentum as the March 15 primary approaches.

With three republicans vying for the vote and a lone democrat on the ticket, candidates are chiming in on what sets them apart.

Republican Mike DeSutter of Woodhull tells WGIL he is relying on a business savvy approach to politics.

“My involvement in OSF Board and I’ve served on both public and private school boards and also my business sense,” DeSutter says. “I’ve got a lot of experience that sets me apart from the other candidates.”

Democratic candidate Bill Butts of Galesburg, the last of four candidates to file in the district, says he has been “solving problems for 37 years” in his law office — experience he believes gives him an edge over whoever his republican opponent will be.

Rio Republican Wayne Saline says he is relying on his past as a Knox County Board member and the Finance Committee chair.

“I have the ability to read budgets, I have the ability to write budgets and I have been involved in making budget cuts and still providing all the necessary services,” Saline says.

Republican candidate Dan Swanson of Alpha says his experience in the military makes him a leader and someone who has the “wherewithal” to address challenging issues in a “tactful, communicable way.”
