SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Republican leader of the Illinois Senate is critical of a top Democrat’s call for an income tax increase.
Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno of Lemont called the idea “outrageous” Wednesday. She says Gov. Bruce Rauner should be able to make basic changes to make Illinois businesses more competitive first.
Radogno was reacting to comments in Chicago by Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. He says fixing a budget deficit requires restoring the tax rate to 5 percent.
It was 5 percent from 2011 to January when Rauner took office and the temporary increase rolled back to 3.75 percent.
Rauner wants laws to make business operations cheaper and curb union power, ideas Madigan calls “extreme.”
Radogno says taxpayers want structural reforms that’ll “lead to a more competitive Illinois economy.”
