Village considers $6.5M plan to replace water meters

TINLEY PARK, Ill. (AP) — Tinley Park officials have developed a plan to replace water meters installed in residents’ homes which apparently overcharged users.

The $6.5 million plan comes six months after the Chicago Tribune reported chronic overcharging from the electronic meters.

The newspaper reports there has been no decision on refunds residents might be due. There is also an ongoing lawsuit against the village.

The village would borrow $6.5 million under the plan to replace more than 18,000 meters. It would cost about $400,000 a year on a low-interest loan for 20 years. With interest, the deal would cost $7.9 million.

A memo from interim Public Works Director Bill Balling, obtained by the Tribune, indicates officials considered a $1 million customer refund. But Balling says there’s no evidence that all meters are malfunctioning.
