Knox County seeks landfill revenue, faces courthouse issues

knox county courthouseAt the upcoming Knox County Board meeting next week, the Building Committee will ask the full board to approve a resolution for the landfill to give $1 per ton to the building committee.

With only $160,000 in their fund, they’re well behind the amount needed to replace the fire escape at the Knox County Courthouse that is need of repair.

Building Committee Co-Chair, Greg Bacon came to the Highway and Landfill Committee meeting last night to explain that it’s likely that the entire fire escape will need to be replaced.

“Nobody wants to tackle the iron fire escape,”Bacon says. “Unless they want to tackle it, they want to take it out and take it back to their shop and rebuild it and bring it back which the Fire Marshal won’t let us do.”

Unable to leave the building without a fire escape while it’s away being repaired he says it’s likely that they’ll have to pay for an entirely new one to be installed with an estimated price of $300,000-$400,000.

Bacon says that once the committee’s $160,000 is gone nothing will be left for courthouse maintenance.

“There is no more line of revenue for the committee or nothing, so either we find a revenue source to help the building committee maintain the courthouse, or it falls back onto public safety money,” Bacon adds.

If the proposal passes it would generate nearly $90,000 a year.
