Motor fuel tax eases financial burden of county road maintenance

knox county sealGov. Bruce Rauner’s signing of a bill that released motor fuel tax dollars to local municipalities has given back payments to Knox County for $190,000.

That sum came from what the state failed to pay in July, August and September.

Rauner signed the bill after municipalities around the state were concerned they would be unable to salt roadways this winter.

County Engineer, Duane Ratermann is glad the funds were received but says in part because of the mild winter so far, Knox County wasn’t in as dire of a situation.

“It just all depends on what kind of weather we have,” Ratermann says. “Right now, we’re mild and we’re not getting snow so we aren’t using salt. That has definitely worked to our advantage. So, right now I have a balance of about $300,000 in my MFT account.”

Average motor fuel tax payments to the county are about $60,000 a month so when back pay from October and November comes through, expected next week, that will be nearly $120,000.
