Quincy replacing hundreds of trees lost in summer storm

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) — A campaign to replace more than 1,000 trees lost in a July windstorm in the city of Quincy is well underway.

Todd Friye is overseeing the Trees for Tomorrow campaign. He says that by the end of this week, 253 trees will have been planted in parks and along city streets.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports that about 35 different types of trees are being used in the replacement effort, which will continue in the spring if funds are available. More than $130,000 has already been donated. Another $70,000 is needed.

In the July storm, winds of up to 74 mph claimed some of the grandest trees in the Mississippi River city in western Illinois.

Friye said many of the trees selected for replanting are improved varieties of the originals.
