Triumphant return for Cuban baseball defectors Puig, Abreu

HAVANA (AP) — Some of the most famous defectors from Cuba in recent memory are making a triumphant return as part of the first Major League Baseball trip to the island since 1999.

The visitors include Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu and shortstop Alexei Ramirez and St. Louis Cardinals catcher Brayan Pena.

The three-day mission’s meant to warm relations between MLB and a Cuban system that has been drained by the loss of many of its best players to the U.S.

Puig wrapped his childhood coach Juan Arechavaleta in a bear-hug and expressed happiness at returning. He’d been barred from returning to Cuba until he was granted special permission for this week’s trip.
