Since December 9th, officers have been handing out cash to who they say are “those in need.” Whether it be a passerby walking down the street or someone known to the department, Christensen says the giving is largely based on the officers perception of who needs the funds this holiday season.
He tells WGIL that so far, money has gone to help a homeless veteran, an elderly couple and a family who needed a little extra help.
“We had an instance where there was a burglary at a house and Christmas presents were taken–that was one of the recipients,” Christensen says. “It’s been a whole collection of stories about perceived need and people have responded very very well. The recipients have been very grateful and the officers have thoroughly enjoyed the projects.”
The gifting is thanks to an anonymous donor who asked if police would distribute the funds. Gifts are being given on traffic stops, and when officers have been called to a residence.
Christensen adds that “the beauty of the program is the random selection if there is a perceived need.”
Officers will continue the program over the next few days.
