A partnership/competition between Churchill Junior High and Lombard Middle School is working to drive hunger out of Galesburg.
Organized by the schools’ student councils, the combined total of cans collected between the dueling schools was somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000.
Churchill Principal Tom Hawkins tells WGIL the drive shows how caring middle school aged kids can be.
“When you tell people you work at a middle school, they either tell you they’re going to pray for you or they run from you,” Hawkins says. “But I could not be more proud of the students in this community, the middle school aged students in this community and their ability to go out and give of themselves to help others in a time of need.”
Hawkins says he was deeply moved by some kids who were so wanting to give that — despite coming from families in need themselves — they were turning in cans they received from the food pantry.
Yesterday Churchill celebrated their students giving by holding “Minute to Win It” games for the top four advisory classes that had collected the most food.
Hawkins gives ample credit to the organization of the schools student councils’ and their advisers Tina Blust and Tara Michaels.
The project has encouraged the Churchill Principal.
“But I could not be more proud of the kids in this community,” Hawkins says.
This is the second year that the two schools have come together to collect food for the Galesburg Rescue Mission.
