Police arrested a Galesburg man early Sunday morning after receiving reports that of a hit and run at Henderson and Main streets.
According to police reports, two women flagged down an officer just after midnight Sunday near the intersection. They told police a white Pontiac Grand Prix drove into the rear of their vehicle, causing cosmetic damage.
The women said the Pontiac driver, later identified as 21-year-old Devonta Gooden, told them to pull ahead and he would exchange with them insurance information.
When the rear-ended vehicle pulled forward, Gooden sped off southbound and drove through railroad crossing as the arms were coming down.
Officers spotted the suspect vehicle at Tompkins and Broad streets and pulled it over. When police approached Gooden, a plastic bag containing what appeared to be cannabis was clearly visible in the center console.
Gooden was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and possession of less than 2.5 grams of cannabis.
His vehicle, which had damage to the front end, was impounded.
