Galesburg School District 205 is preparing for new laws dealing with concussion protocol for high school athletes.
The district is charged in coming up with a plan for when athletes can return to the field or classroom after suffering a concussion.
205 Superintendent Ralph Grimm tells WGIL the committee developing a protocol will be assembled of the high school athletic trainer, school nurse, an administrator and area physicians.
“I’m going to guess that with that type of representation on the committee, some pretty well established protocols that have already been developed are going to be looked at and probably be implemented or adopted by school districts,” Grimm says.
Regardless of whether or not the new statute has a real impact on keeping students safe, it continues a positive trend of concussion awareness.
“We’re going to continue to be more aware of things to look for when a student has received a blow to the head,” Grimm says.
The law also requires that no later than September 1, 2016 that all state coaches and officials complete at least two hours of a training program on concussions.
