Martha King, 91 of Galesburg, passed away peacefully at 11:45 p.m. Sunday, December 27, 2015 at her home surrounded by 5 generations of her loving family.
She was born February 19, 1924 in Cameron, the daughter of Kenny and Margaret Shaw Medhurst. She married Harold King in 1944 in Knoxville and they shared 49 years together. Harold preceded her in death in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Walter, Ward and Robert Medhurst.
Martha is survived by her daughter, Mary Ruth Kennett of Galesburg; two granddaughters, Tina Gruber of Galesburg and Kristie Strieby of Carlsbad, New Mexico. She was known as “Nanny” to her 9 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren; and is beloved by many nieces, nephews and their families.
She graduated from Alexis High School in 1942 and was a beloved neighbor in Gilson, Lake Bracken, and Galesburg. She most recently retired from managing the restaurant at Lake Bracken Country Club in 1988.
Martha never knew a stranger and that was evident if you ever had the pleasure of attending one of her infamous parties. Her door was always open and everyone was always welcome at Nanny’s house whether for a chat, sleepover, or a visit. Most of all Martha will be remembered for her caring but stubborn spirit by all who knew her, including memories of family gatherings, road trips with friends and family, Sunday Bridge, weekends at Bluegrass festivals, and of course her chocolate chip pies.
Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at the Gilson Cemetery. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. At her request there will be no funeral or visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Following the graveside service family and friends are invited to the Church of God of Prophecy, 207 N. Washington St. in Abingdon to continue to celebrate Martha’s life during a time of food and fellowship. All food donations may be dropped off at the Church of God of Prophecy anytime that morning.
