Shedd officials will conduct tests after otter suddenly dies

CHICAGO (AP) — Officials with Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium say one of the facilities rescued female sea otters has died.

Vice President of Animal Health Dr. Bill Van Bonn announced the death earlier this week. Initial results of a necropsy show a rare and sudden abdominal condition of which the underlying cause is usually unknown. Additional testing is expected in the coming weeks.

The otter, named Cayucos (ky-YOU-cos), arrived at the Shedd several years ago. The otter was found stranded at five weeks old in California. The Shedd became the pup’s permanent home after U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials found her unreleasable.
