Galesburg Community Foundation takes in $1M in donations, disburses $1M in grants

The Galesburg Community Foundation has something to celebrate — in 2015, the local charity group brought in $1 million in donations and distributed another $1 million in grants to area non-profits.

GCF Executive Director Josh Gibb tells WGIL this is the first time both donations and grant disbursements have broken the $1 million threshold the same year.

“The endowments have grown to the place where we’ve actually made $1 million in investments into the community” Gibb says, “and so, the foundation wants to give our community the opportunity to celebrate that.”

Community supporters from Knox and Warren counties are invited to celebrate the milestone with the GCF from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Iron Spike.

In a news release, the Community Foundation says they have distributed more than $4 million in the last five years and taken in more than $7 million in contributions.

In December, the GCF announced some $250,000 in grants would be shared among 45 non-profits in the area through competitive grants. Those funds went to organizations such as Special Olympics Illinois, Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center and FISH Food Pantry.

Additionally, the GCF says they offered a match program that worked with 20 nonprofits in Knox and Warren counties to build $20,000 endowments to “forever sustain their missions.”

This year marks the Community Foundation’s 12th year in Galesburg.
