Radar Run to still speed off for a cause this season

Due to a lack of ice at Lake Storey in Galesburg, the annual snowmobile radar run was postponed yesterday, however, racers will still be out sometime later this month to participate in the name of charity.

The event that has been going on since the 1980’s is hosted every year by the Prairie Drifters Snowmobile Club–a group of local snowmobile enthusiasts interested in riding but also in giving back.

That’s according to Radar Run Coordinator Mike Dennis who tells WGIL proceeds will continue to be spread around the community this year.

“We use it as a fundraiser to not only support the club, but we do donate to local charities,” Dennis says. “We also donate to Knox County Sheriff’s Department’s snowmobile search and rescue team.”

FISH Food Pantry and the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle program are just a couple of area organizations that benefit, Dennis says.

The event itself raises those funds in style.

“We’ve got a 1,000 foot track and we’ve usually got about 1,500 feet of shutdown so the sleds have plenty of room to slow down. It’s a speed run, it’s just to see how fast you can go in 1,000 feet.”

Dennis says the event has seen up to 80 sleds in past years. Prairie Drifters will try for ice again on January 17th or the 31st if the prior date falls through.

Registration will be at 9 a.m. the day of the event with speed runs starting at 10 a.m.
