Man photographing schools shot dead by police near Chicago

ZION, Ill. (AP) — Lake County authorities say a 38-year-old man wearing a tactical-style vest and carrying a BB gun was killed in a police-involved shooting in the Chicago suburb of Zion.

Sheriff’s Detective Christopher Covelli said the man was killed after he led officers on a foot chase.

Authorities say officers responded early Wednesday to a report that a suspicious person was taking photographs of two local schools. The person, who appeared to be wearing body armor, was located by investigators and a foot pursuit followed. A struggle between the officers and the suspect ensued, resulting in the man being shot.

Covelli said the body armor was found to be a homemade tactical-style vest with metal inserts.

The man’s name hasn’t been released, nor have those of the officers involved in the shooting.
