Sterling police chief retires, public send-off is planned

STERLING, Ill. (AP) — The police chief of Sterling is retiring after about two decades in the post.

Sauk Valley Media report Chief Ron Potthoff’s last day is Tuesday. City officials say there’ll be an open house and send-off in the afternoon. 

Potthoff has been a Sterling police officer for more than 40 years and became chief of police in 1996. 

Lieutenant Tim Morgan will be interim chief. He’s a 22 year veteran police officer.
