Chicago teachers hold “walk-ins” at city schools

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Teachers Union says it expects parents to hold rallies at 100 of the city’s schools in support of increased education funding and a fair teacher contract.

Union officials say the “walk-ins” early Wednesday are intended to show city residents will not accept just any solution to past mismanagement offered by the Board of Education.

Chicago Public Schools last week slashed millions of dollars from school budgets, forcing principals to refigure their plans with the second semester just underway.

The principals received news of the $85 million cut as the school district faces a $1.1 billion budget deficit, no income from the state of Illinois and no contract with the Chicago Teachers Union.

Schools CEO Forest Claypool has said the steps taken were necessary because the district’s cash position “becomes tighter every day.”
