WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — Lake County authorities are investigating the death of an inmate who had been housed in the county jail’s medical unit.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Friday the Lake County Major Crime Task Force will investigate the 36-year-old man’s death.
The man arrived Monday at the jail in Waukegan after his arrest on drug-related charges. He was taken to a medical unit jail cell after telling staff he was feeling ill from drug withdrawal symptoms.
Police said the man was found unresponsive in that cell Friday and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
An autopsy by the county coroner’s office found the man’s preliminary cause of death appeared to be of natural causes. Final toxicology results are pending.
